Hawaiian Fun Under the Texas Sun!

“I see trees of green, red roses too. I watch them bloom for me and you and I think to myself, what a wonderful world.” Israel Kamakawiwo’ole, Over the Rainbow.

Everyone’s favorite season is finally upon us and the world is wonderful- as long as you have a plan in place for when school is out of session. Unfortunately, your window to get planning under way is dwindling, so if you still don’t know what to do with your child this summer then this list is for you! Full of fun parks, like Hawaiian Falls and educational places, like the Waco Mammoth National Park you’ll never have to hear the dreaded words “I’m so bored…” again!

Waco

Waco locals, did you know that you are living near one of the newer national park systems to be declared in recent years? Waco Mammoth National Park is an active archeological dig site sitting within 100 acres of wooded parkland along the Bosque River. Discovered in 1978 the site has so far been shown to contain the bones of a nursing herd of 16 Columbian Mammoths, 5 more females unrelated to the herd and one male mammoth, as well as a western camel, dwarf antelope, American alligator, giant tortoise, and the tooth of a juvenile saber tooth tiger. While some of the bones have been removed for study many of the bones were left and are viewable by the public in the exact position they were found. If you have a budding archeologist on your hands, this is a can’t miss trip.

Located just 11 minutes away is the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, home to over 300 Texas Legends the hall of fame is meant to be an inspiration to both the young and the young of heart as well to preserve the stories of late great athletes. With each new induction ceremony, the sprawling 35,000 sq. ft facility gains another exhibit sure to fascinate the player’s young fans. Parents deserve to have some fun too, so plan a visit to Chip and Joanna Gain’s Magnolia Market. Owned by the stars of HGTV’s Fixer Upper the sprawling two and a half acres features a store, two-grain silos, and acts as a community center for local residents with a large artificial turf, picnic tables, a little garden, and nearby food trucks. This store is definitely a must see for local residents and visitors alike.

Garland

Whether you live in Garland or are just visiting you’ll be delighted by all the cultural options available for children such as the Garland Symphony where you can visit Haydn’s House, Beethoven’s apartment, and the Cathedral where Schubert sang as a boy all in one day! Or learn more about the history of the city of Garland at the Garland Landmark Museum, established in 1972 the museum houses historical artifacts and documents all donated to the Garland Landmark Society. Take in a show at the Garland Granville Arts Center. Built in 1982 the complex includes two luxurious proscenium theaters and the exquisite Plaza Theatre.

The Colony

Support the local community with a trip to the Lakeside Community Theater, a non-profit, the theatre exists to entertain and educate the community in the theatre and performing arts, while providing a place for local talent to shine. Take in plays preformed by amateur local actors such as “Five Women Wearing The Same Dress” playing at 3 pm Saturday, June 30th. Afterwards bring the kids to one of the many great lake side parks like Willow Grove Park. Offering a scenic location perfect for picnics, fishing, and overnight camping the peaceful waters and beautiful surroundings are the perfect place to bring the kids and relax.

Mansfield

Give your kids the perfect chance to learn about the town of Mansfield at the Mansfield Historical Museum and Heritage Center located in the recently restored W.B. McKnight Building. Featuring displays and artifacts from early settlers a trip to the museum is a must for first time visitors to get a sense of the area. Then let the kids run wild in the 80-acre Elmer W. Oliver Nature Park. Featuring pond, forest, prairie and Creekside habitats there’s always something new to view at the park!

Roanoke

Whether you live in Roanoke or are just visiting the town for a day a visit to Downtown Roanoke is always a must. Take the kids for a walk down the historic streets and explore the various shops and restaurants the town boasts. On Thursdays, be sure to stay for Evenings on Oak Street where you can listen to some truly talented local bands and musicians from 7pm to 8 pm while exploring the town.  Set your alarm clocks for fresh local ingredients, found only at the Roanoke Farmers Market. Held every Saturday from 8 am to noon the farmers market features fresh fruits and vegetables grown at local farms.

Have a Healthy Summer: with Sun, Fun and Safety

Have a Healthy Summer: with Sun, Fun and Safety

Ah, those lazy, hot days of summer. Think vacations, picnics, and fun times with friends. It’s a good time for the entire family to relax and enjoy making memories together.

To ensure your summer is safe, healthy, and happy, consider these tips from Nancy Georgekutty, MD, an independently practicing physician on the medical staff at Methodist Mansfield Medical Center.

Practice water safety

Water sports and spending time at the pool is a summertime favorite, and it offers a quick way to cool down after outdoor sports. However, the pool’s inviting and refreshing water also holds a danger for children, Dr. Georgekutty warns.

“To keep children safe this season, remember to never leave them near or in a pool or other body of water without adult supervision, even if they are good swimmers and wearing flotation devices,” she says. “Adults should actively supervise children by giving them their undivided attention. Avoid being distracted by other activities like using your cell phone or reading a book.”

Dr. Georgekutty says infants and toddlers should be within an arm’s length of an adult when they are in or near the water. After they get out of the water, remove all pool toys so children aren’t tempted to reach for them later.

She encourages teaching children to tread water, float, and swim. Children as young as six months can enroll in swim classes. “I’ve had Charlotte in swim lessons since she was six months old. And at a young age, they are likely to practice and remember what they’ve learned,” she says.

“Also remember to use plenty of sunscreen to protect skin from damaging ultraviolet rays. Choose one that is broad spectrum with an SPF of 15 or higher,” Dr. Georgekutty recommends. “Apply liberally, even on cloudy or cooler days. And don’t forget to wear a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking shades.”

Stay hydrated by drinking more water, especially if you are exercising or working in the heat. “Water bottles are a convenient way to keep hydrated. Add slices of lemons or cucumber for added flavor, or for a sweeter taste try oranges, raspberries, or strawberries. This gives water flavor without the calories,” Dr. Georgekutty says. “Avoid drinks that contain alcohol or sugar, which can be dehydrating.”

Above all, have a safe, healthy summer, and enjoy the outdoors!

From Mild to Wild You Can Find it at Hawaiian Falls!

No summer is complete without a visit to Hawaiian Falls! Discover your summer on over 100 rides and attractions in our 5 parks. Taking up over 100 acres in Texas, our parks will have you shouting “Cowabunga” in no time!

To help you plan your next visit we’ve put together a list of some of our favorite attractions at each park:

You’ll be able to ride the storm on Tempest Tower. Made up of slides The Rush, Monsoon, Typhoon and Tsunami the only question you’ll have is which your favorite is. Tsunami is a 2-person tube slide that curls around like a coiled snake before springing into a splashing finish. If satisfying all your senses is what you’re really looking for in a slide, then The Rush is a can’t miss. You’ll slide down this tube slide in relative darkness while your favorite jams play in time to a laser light show and set of water misters. If speeding down a free fall body slide is more for you, then the monsoon and typhoon are sure to delight. These 65-foot slides take riders through and over the edge. Located in Hawaiian Falls Waco, Garland, and Roanoke this set of 4 slides will have you splashing into fun!

If you’re visiting Hawaiian Falls Mansfield, then be sure to take a ride on the Cliffhanger. Grab your friends and a raft to get sliding down an amazing 40-foot drop. To keep up the adrenaline pumping fun head on over to the Hawaiian Halfpipe. You’ll feel “totally radical” when a dark twist and sudden twist launches you into the halfpipe and don’t worry, skateboards are not required on this halfpipe. This attraction is available in Hawaiian Falls Mansfield, and well as The Colony, Garland, and Roanoke

Looking for a truly unique experience? Then head on over to Hawaiian Falls Roanoke for the world’s first dueling tube racer. Beach Blasters is a ride which launches 2 two-person tubes in opposite directions, so challenge a friend and see which team of two will be launched towards victory. Which slide is faster? We’ll never tell.

Ready to relax after a long week? Then the Kona Kooler and Rainforest River Adventure are for you. These lazy rivers are the perfect way to unwind and beat the summer heat. You’ll float aside beautifully designed landscapes at Hawaiian Falls Garland, The Colony, Waco, and Mansfield. Then take a beach day in central Texas with Waikiki Beach and Breaker Bay. Available at all locations you’ll be able to brave the waves in a 16,000 square foot wave pool. Surf’s up!

Play on the world’s largest aqua play structure, Mega Waterworld located in Hawaiian Falls Roanoke. This behemoth includes a three-lane racer, family raft ride, thrilling body slides, two dump buckets, multiple interactive pulleys, wheels, and great water features. Just remember to watch the clock because with everything in this play structure you can easily play the day away!

For the Keikis we have multiple attractions specifically designed to be safe, fun, and engaging in all of our parks. If your child wants to feel like the Big Kahuna of Honolulu then bring them to Hawaiian Falls Roanoke for the Keiki Surf Slider, a one-story slide that will have them smiling. While there be sure to check out the Keike Cowabunga slide, Keike Tsunami, Keike Pipeline, and Keike Waikiki Wipeout. The family-friendly Keiki Kove, available at Hawaiian Falls Garland, The Colony, Waco and the Methodist Mansfield Keiko Kove at Hawaiian Falls Mansfield will bring out the kid in everyone. This massive interactive rain-fortress features pulleys, rope-ladders, water-buckets, geysers, 3 forty feet slides, a dump bucket and at Hawaiian Falls Waco, a lazy river and whirl pool.

Happy Holidays from Hawaiian Falls!

DSC_0110.jpg

The holidays are almost here! While parents are busy shopping, wrapping gifts and preparing for family gatherings, it’s easy to forget how you are going to entertain your kids when school gets out for winter break. Children are often excited for a much needed break from waking up early and homework but once the excitement wears off they can easily get bored.

Get kids involved in preparing for the holidays. Have a family craft day; make decorations to put around the house or ornaments to hang on the tree. When baking holiday cookies, let them help. Have kids decorate a few special cookies for Santa to eat on Christmas Eve.

Teach young children about the importance of giving back during the holidays by taking them to volunteer for a local charity. If you can’t donate your time, donate clothes that have been outgrown. When you are out shopping, have kids pick out a toy to donate to Toys for Tots or a similar charity. Even small gestures can make a huge difference to someone in need.

Finding ways to entertain kids is not just a dilemma for Christmas Break, the three months over summer can be difficult to fill with fun activities – unless you have a Hawaiian Falls Season Pass! Buying your season pass early is the best way to guarantee unlimited summer fun for the best price. Through December 31st, season passes are $69.99 plus taxes and fees. Season pass holders get awesome perks like early park entry, coupons, exclusive hours and more! It’s never too early to start planning for summer, click here for more details.

If you’re still looking for the perfect gift, we are excited to announce the recent addition of Gift Cards to our online store. They are new for 2018 and can be used at any Hawaiian Falls location. Through the end of December, get a free $10 gift card for every $50 in gift cards purchased.

From the staff at Hawaiian Falls, we wish you and your family a great holiday season!

Hurricane Harvey Relief

This past week, some of our team members from The Colony along with our President, Clint Hill, visited the Houston area with a truck full of donations that were donated by guests for the victims of Hurricane Harvey during the last weekend of Hawaiian Falls' 2017 season.

We partnered with Bent Tree Frisco and Real Hope Community Church in Richmond to deliver all the supplies that everyone so graciously donated. In total, we delivered over 6 pallets of water, 100+ packages of diapers and over 40 boxes of toiletries, cleaning supplies, food, and household necessities.

“As you can see from the pictures, these communities that were hit by Hurricane Harvey are going to need our help, our donations, and our prayers for many more months to come,” said Mr. Hill. “The pride of Houstonians and Texans were alive and well. I cannot think of a better place to live than here.”

Hawaiian Falls would like to thank each and every one of you who participated in our drive to help Houston and the surrounding areas. We know first-hand that your contributions are making a difference today in somebody’s life.

Summer tips from Methodist Mansfield Medical Center:

As your child heads back to school and competes in school sports, overuse and trauma injuries are common. Whether it’s low-back pain from playing football or an ankle injury sustained while playing volleyball, athletes can reduce injuries by strengthening all of their muscles and adopting a daily training program designed to optimize performance and minimize the chance of injuries.

Consistent exercise, strength training and cross-training can boost energy, keep muscles in shape, and help prevent injury. Every day, increase the heart rate for at least 10 minutes at a time, and perform jump routines and pivoting exercises. Take it slowly at first, and then gradually increase the time and intensity of the exercise. And don’t forget about your core, where strength is critical in any sport.  Drink plenty of water throughout the day, every day. Make a habit of drinking at least 16 ounces of water two hours prior to exercising and remember throughout practice — about every 15 to 20 minutes — to keep your body hydrated.

A great way to exercise is to swim at Hawaiian Falls or the natatorium to recharge and rejuvenate. Another great park is Oliver Nature Park in Mansfield. Enjoy the slides and river at the water park or a special Treehouse Overlook. Pack a snack and post up at one of the areas while taking it all in.  And remember to protect yourself from the sun and stay hydrated.

Five-Year-Old Forgets Cancer for Fun Day with Family

Hawaiian Falls is grateful to have had the opportunity to give a wish-granting experience that gave hope to a child battling cancer.  Five-year-old Isabella Day of Dallas and her family took a break from all the doctor visits and cancer treatments to have a fun-filled day at Hawaiian Falls Mansfield. Isabella was diagnosed with stage IV neuroblastoma at only nine months old.

Surgery, chemotherapy and all other treatments have been ineffective in controlling Isabella’s cancer. For one special day, the family just wanted Isabella to enjoy being a child and have fun. In support of Alex’s Lemonade Stand Foundation, Power Home Remodeling adopted Isabella and her family as their local HERO family. They took care of all expenses so the entire family could focus on making memories.

The Hawaiian Falls “ohana” is dedicated to our mission of bringing families closer together, and is thankful to have been able to share the “aloha spirit” with Isabella. Mahalo to all the people involved in making this day special for Isabella and her family.

National Flip Flop Day

June 16th is National Flip Flop Day.  This whimsical and fun national day of recognition seems quite appropriate for Hawaiian Falls, since flip flops are the normal summer attire for the majority of Hawaiian Falls’ guests.  But we wanted to take it a step further, no pun intended!

Hawaiian Falls will be teaming up with the oldest children’s charity in Dallas, Buckner International, on Friday, June 16th to help kids all over the world receive a new pair of shoes. New shoes put children on a path to health, education, hope and opportunity.

Guests that bring in a new pair of sneakers, sandals and even flip flops to any Hawaiian Falls locations on National Flip Flop Day will receive a special $5 off a general admission ticket.

Buckner Shoes for Orphan Souls is the largest humanitarian aid project that Buckner handles. Donations are received by some of the most vulnerable children in the world. Buckner International has distributed shoes to children in over 80 countries. Places such as Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and Kenya all benefit from the donations received from Buckner. Shoes protect against diseases and infections, lower barriers to school attendance, and demonstrate worth.

Not only do they help kids overseas, they also support the local communities in the DFW area. Nearly 30% of shoes collected by Buckner remain in the United States. A lot of these shoes stay right in the state of Texas. Over 3 million pairs shoes and socks have been donated by Buckner since 1999.

This summer, you can enjoy a fun day with the family while helping others less fortunate by participating in our shoe drive. Walgreens is currently selling discounted daily admission tickets and season passes, and this is also a perfect place to purchase a pair of flip flops or sandals for a good price. This is a chance to give back to your community, teach your children about giving to those less fortunate and help kids all over the world. No child anywhere in the world should be without shoes on their feet!

Homeschool Day at Hawaiian Falls The Colony

Homeschooling in the United States is becoming more and more popular these days. It is a progressive movement around the country and in many parts of the world. Some people say it might be the fastest-growing form of education in the United States. Parents choose to educate their kids at home for several reasons and it is estimated that there are now over two million kids being homeschooled in our country.

Many kids are homeschooled because their parents want to educate them and feel they can do it best in their home environment. Parents can also customize or individualize the curriculum and learning environment. Homeschooling can also provide a safer environment for some kids who have experienced bullying, physical violence and other negative occurrences that can take place at an institutional school.

Field Trips can be educational, inspirational and fun for homeschoolers. Engaging kids in social and educational activities outside their homes is very important. Since they learn at home around family members, it is beneficial for them to interact with others who are not part of their family. Kids also get a chance to take a break from their studies and just have FUN!

Hawaiian Falls is calling all homeschoolers on Thursday, May 18th from 10AM – 3PM for Homeschool Day! This event is for The Colony location only and tickets can be purchased at Hawaiian Falls (The Colony) the day of the event.

There will be two ticket options that are available. $20 per person includes admission, a hot dog, a soft drink and chips. $25 per person includes admission, choice of a hot dog, hamburger or pizza, soft drinks all day and chips.

Homeschool Day is nine days before the official start of the season. You get a chance to experience the fun before Opening Day! Come soak up the sun and kick off your summer of awesome. We hope to see you there!
